Mixed Conditionals in English: Rules & Examples — الجمل الشرطية المُختلَطة

Mixed conditionals join two different times: a cause in one time and a result in another.

الجمل الشرطية المختلطة تربط بين سبب في زمن ونتيجة في زمن آخر.

Why Mixed?

Sometimes the condition is about the past, but the result is about now or the future — or the other way around.

أحيانًا يكون الشرط عن الماضي بينما النتيجة عن الحاضر أو المستقبل، أو العكس.

Tip: Look for time signals like now, today, these days, by now (present result) or yesterday, last year, in 2010 (past result).

نصيحة: انتبه لكلمات الزمن مثل الآن، اليوم، هذه الأيام (نتيجة في الحاضر) أو أمس، السنة الماضية، في 2010 (نتيجة في الماضي).

Core Patterns • الأنماط الأساسية

Type A — Past cause → Present result

If + Past Perfect (had + V3), would + base (now).

لو + ماضٍ تام (had + التصريف الثالث)، would + الفعل (نتيجة الآن).

  • If I had studied harder, I would have a better job now.
  • لو كنت قد درست بجد، لكان لدي وظيفة أفضل الآن.

Type B — Present (unreal) cause → Past result

If + Past Simple (unreal now), would have + V3 (past result).

لو + ماضٍ بسيط (غير حقيقي الآن)، would have + التصريف الثالث (نتيجة في الماضي).

  • If I were taller, I would have become a pilot.
  • لو كنت أطول، لكنت أصبحت طيّارًا.

*Question forms are less common; we usually keep the if-clause after the main clause: Would you be happier if…?

Type A — Past → Present

  • If I had slept earlier, I would feel better now.
  • لو كنت نمت مبكرًا، لشعرتُ بتحسّن الآن.
  • If we had left on time, we would be at the office by now.
  • لو كنا غادرنا في الوقت، لكنا في المكتب حتى الآن.

Type B — Present → Past

  • If the weather were warmer, we would have gone to the beach yesterday.
  • لو كان الجو أدفأ، لكنا ذهبنا إلى الشاطئ أمس.
  • If she spoke Spanish, she would have understood the guide.
  • لو كانت تتحدث الإسبانية، لكانت فهمت الدليل.

Common Mistakes • أخطاء شائعة

  1. Using would in the if-clause ❌
    If I would study, I would be…
    ✅ If I studied, I would be…

    لا نستخدم would داخل جملة if.

  2. Wrong tense in Type A if-clause ❌
    If I have studied, I would be…
    ✅ If I had studied, I would be…

    في Type A نستخدم الماضي التام (had + V3) في if-clause.

  3. was vs were after if
    Formal/neutral: If I were you… ✅ • Informal speech: If I was you… (heard but less standard).

    في الأسلوب الرسمي نستخدم were مع I/he/she/it للتعبير عن الافتراض.

  4. Time adverb clash
    If I had saved, I would buy a car yesterday.
    ✅ If I had saved, I would buy a car now.

    تأكّد أن كلمات الزمن تناسب النتيجة (حاضر أو ماضي).
