🗺️ A1 Präpositionen – German Prepositions for Beginners
Prepositions tell you where something is, when it happens, or how it relates to something else. At A1 level, focus on the most common ones and which case they require.
📍 Prepositions of Place (Dative)

| an | at / on (vertical surface) | Das Bild hängt an der Wand. |
| auf | on (horizontal surface) | Die Tasse steht auf dem Tisch. |

| über | above / over | Die Lampe hängt über dem Tisch. |
| vor | in front of | Er steht vor der Tür. |
| hinter | behind | Die Katze ist hinter dem Sofa. |
| neben | next to / beside | Sie sitzt neben mir. |
| zwischen | between | Das Café ist zwischen der Bank und dem Hotel. |
Two-Way Prepositions
The prepositions above (in, an, auf, unter, über, vor, hinter, neben, zwischen) take Dative for location (Wo? = Where?) and Accusative for movement towards (Wohin? = Where to?). Example: Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch (location, dative) vs Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch (movement, accusative).
