German has three genders: masculine (der), feminine (die) and neuter (das). Every noun has a gender that must be memorised. This guide covers gender rules, indefinite articles, the negative article kein and declension across all four cases.

1. Definite Articles (the)

Gender Hints

Most nouns ending in -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft are feminine. Most ending in -er, -el, -en are masculine. Most ending in -chen, -lein are neuter. Always learn the article with the noun!

3. The Negative Article: kein / keine

Use kein to negate nouns. It follows the same pattern as ein.

Ich habe keinen Hund. (m, accusative)I don't have a dog.
Das ist kein Problem.That is not a problem.

Only masculine accusative changes: ein β†’ einen, der β†’ den, kein β†’ keinen. All other genders stay the same in accusative.
