β οΈ Avoid These Common Mistakes When Learning German
Every German learner makes the same mistakes β especially in the early stages. Knowing them in advance will save you months of frustration and help you sound more natural much faster.
β Mistake 1: Forgetting Noun Gender
Every German noun has a gender (masculine, feminine or neuter) and you must learn it with the noun. Saying der TΓΌr instead of die TΓΌr is one of the most common errors.
Always learn nouns with their article: not "Tisch" but "der Tisch". Use colour coding: blue for der, red for die, green for das.
β Mistake 2: Using "der" When You Need "den"
Masculine nouns change in the accusative: der β den. Saying "Ich sehe der Mann" instead of "Ich sehe den Mann" is extremely common.
β Mistake 3: Confusing "seit" and "vor"
| Word | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| seit | since / for (still ongoing) | Ich lerne seit zwei Jahren Deutsch. |
| vor | ago (completed) | Ich habe das vor zwei Jahren gelernt. |
β Mistake 4: Wrong Verb Position
In German, the verb is always second in a main clause β even when the sentence starts with a time expression.
β Mistake 5: Translating "know" as "wissen" Always
| German | Use for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| wissen | knowing facts | Ich weiΓ, dass Berlin groΓ ist. |
| kennen | knowing people / places | Ich kenne Berlin gut. |
β Mistake 6: Saying "Ich bin heiΓ" for "I am hot"
Ich bin heiΓ means "I am sexy/hot" in a physical sense! For temperature, say Mir ist heiΓ (I feel hot) or Es ist heiΓ (It is hot).
βοΈ Quick Check
1. Correct this: "Ich sehe der Hund." Ich sehe den Hund. (m accusative)
2. Which word: "I've known him ___ 3 years." seit (ongoing: Ich kenne ihn seit 3 Jahren.)
3. Fix: "Morgen ich arbeite nicht." Morgen arbeite ich nicht. (verb second!)
